Dental Management of Patients with GERD

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter, causing frequent reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus and the oral cavity. Affecting 18-34% of the Canadian population, the incidence of GERD has increased since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic due to higher levels of stress, increased alcohol consumption and an increase in central obesity.

In this episode of CDA Oasis Live, Dr. PJ Murphy, Clinical Associate Professor at UBC, joins Dr. John O’Keefe to discuss the impact of GERD on oral health. Dr. Murphy outlines the common symptoms to look out for in the dental office, he recommends key management practices, and highlights the important role dentists play in diagnosing a condition that can have significant consequences if left unchecked.

Nice presentation on GERD! Can NSAIDs be safely administered to a GERD patient?
