What is the Imposter Phenomenon?

Dentistry, like many other health-related disciplines, has long been an attractive option for the ambitious, determined and goal-oriented individual. And while living the life of a high achiever certainly has many benefits, on a personal level, it can present some challenges.

One such challenge is Imposter Phenomenon, a psychological pattern in which an individual doubts their accomplishments or talents and experiences a persistent fear of being exposed as a fraud. The phenomenon typically affects high achieving individuals and can put them at an increased risk of psychological distress and burnout.

In this edition of CDA Oasis Live, Dr. Jessica Metcalfe talks to Dr. John O’Keefe, Director of Knowledge Networks CDA, about the challenges of living and working with Imposter Phenomenon. She explains the 5 personality types of imposter, walks through the imposter cycle, and suggests that by implementing a shift in mindset, individuals can get much relief from persistent feelings of self-doubt.
