Geriatric Dentistry – An Interdisciplinary Approach

Dialogue between dentists and those in other health-related professions has become an increasingly important part of the overall healthcare package, especially when it comes to the care of vulnerable groups, such as the older adult population.

Oral healthcare is not something that geriatricians and family doctors are trained in. Dentists can really add value to the general healthcare system.”

Dr. Nicholas Tong, Program Director for the General Practice Residency at the University of British Columbia Faculty of Dentistry, was recently invited to give a talk to the Division of Geriatric Medicine at UBC on the role of dentistry in the overall healthcare system.

In this short discussion with Dr. John O’Keefe, Director of Knowledge Networks CDA, Dr. Tong outlines the scope of his talk, highlights the value that dentists can add to the general health of older adults, and expresses his hopes for geriatric dentistry in the future.
