Putting Artificial Intelligence to Work in the Dental Office

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think like humans and mimic their actions. The term is also applied to characterise machines that exhibit human-like mind actions, such as learning and problem-solving. The most appealing trait of artificial intelligence is its ability to rationalize and take actions that have the best chance of achieving a specific goal. The most basic principle of artificial intelligence is that human intelligence can be methodically defined so that a machine can easily mimic it and execute tasks, from the most simple to the more complex.

Dentistry is no different than any other field that has been affected by technology and artificial intelligence is entering dental offices from the main door. Dr. Natalie Archer has adopted the Dental Attendant, AI software for dental offices, a chatbot that can benefit consumers and dental office administrators. She spoke with Dr. John O'Keefe about her experience in implementing this AI service.

Dr. Natalie Archer is the CEO and Founder of Archer Dental Corp. She's also a past Vice-President of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario. She has spent some time helping design and test systems for delivering AI-based chatbots to engage dental patients and convert potential new patients via useful conversations through websites and social media.  Always curious and living and working in one of the world’s hubs for AI innovation, Dr. Archer is an emerging thought leader on the role that AI can play in dentistry.

Disclaimer: Dr. Natalie Archer is the founder of Open Wide Group which is the parent company of Dental Attendant, an AI powered chat bot that streamline dental practice businesses.

    Regarding AI

Might I suggest AI might also stand for Angry Individual, when I am confronted with an automated answering machine.

Regarding Websites. Substance is trumped by Branding…a.k.a. Manufactured Image. One no longer needs to actually provide excellence in Dentistry, when one can hire a company to design a website that claims such is the case.

For a deeper understanding regarding the Philosophy of Mind and Consciousness, might I suggest writings by Roger Primrose, Daniel Dennett or John Searle. They tackle the question…Is human consciousness computational?

Ah, the Personal Touch…that warm fuzzy feeling that can only be experienced texting with a “bot”.

Was it a slow day at Oasis?
