Increasing access to 3D Printed Implantable Medical Devices for patients. canada.ca: To facilitate this emerging area of patient treatment, Health Canada published new guidance describing the information and evidence that companies should provide when applying for a medical device licence for a 3D printed implantable medical device. … As of April 10, 2019, twenty 3D printed implantable devices have been approved for orthopaedic and dental applications, such as cranial repair or tooth replacement. CIHR Funds Biomedical Engineering Research in Dentistry. mcgill.ca: The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) are funding a Collaborative Health Research Project lead by Dentistry researchers Drs. Maryam Tabrizian, and Monzur Murshed, in partnership with the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). Read more

New faces and new roles in pediatric dentistry. dal.ca: They teach in the Dalhousie Faculty of Dentistry and supervise students at a weekly paediatric clinic there, but they spend the majority of their time tucked away in a brightly-coloured, toy-filled clinic in the IWK Health Centre. Read more

Oral Health Rehabilitation Fund receives support. dal.ca: The money represents the profits from the Homecoming Celebration Dinner, held in September 2018. Each year, the money raised from the dinner goes to support one of the Faculty’s outreach clinics. Read more

First-time cannabis use up after legalization, StatsCan reports. cbc.ca: More Canadians say they’ve used cannabis recreationally since it was legalized last fall, particularly those aged 45 to 64 and males, according to Statistics Canada. Group applies to recognize orofacial pain as dental specialty. ada.org: The American Academy of Orofacial Pain submitted on May 3 an application and request to recognize orofacial pain as a dental specialty, which is now under review by the National Commission for Recognition of Dental Specialties and Certifying Boards’ review committee. Northern Irish orthodontist inaugurated as BDA’s 133rd President. bda.org: The force behind British Dental Association’s presence in Northern Ireland, and former Chair of both NI and UK Councils, Roz McMullan was installed today as BDA President. Read more

AGD President Admonishes The Atlantic Article and Calls for Dentists to Uphold Ethical Standards. agd.org: The Academy of General Dentistry’s president, Dr. Neil J. Gajjar, responded with a letter to the editor commending the disclosure of such poor business ethics while also admonishing the magazine’s position and blatant attack on the industry. Read more

The future of dentistry – reasons to be cheerful? dentistry.co.uk: Technological changes, digitisation, contract reform, the rise of patients’ savviness and social media, and regulatory requirements. These are just some of the factors that could have an impact on the future of dentistry and shift not only in the way clinicians and dental teams operate and how they see their career path, but also the public’s perspective of the profession.
