Dr. Cameron Grant, Recipient of the Keith Titley Graduate Student Award

I had the pleasure to host Dr. Cameron Grant, general dentist and currently pediatric dentistry resident. Dr. Grant was recently awarded the Keith Titley Graduate Student Award by the Canadian Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Grant’s research is in its final stages and I hope to host him again to learn about its outcomes.

I hope you enjoy the conversation. Please share your thoughts, questions, and suggestions with us through oasisdiscussions@cda-adc.ca

Until next time!

Chiraz Guessaier,
CDA Oasis Manager

Highlights

The purpose of Dr. Grant’s study is to measure the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQL) in preschool children with severe early childhood caries prior to undergoing rehabilitative dental surgery under general anesthesia and at least 3 months post dental surgery. 1

150 preschool-aged children and their primary caregiver/parent participated in the study. The validated Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS) interviewer lead questionnaire (published by Pahel et al. in 2007) was used in the study.  A family characteristic profile which included information about dental insurance, income, and parental/primary caregiver level of education was also collected.

This study is part of a larger research project investigating whether there are changes in the nutritional status of preschool children with S-ECC following dental surgery.  Differences in iron status, 25 (OH) D status, and growth (BMI) at the time of their dental surgery and three months post-surgery were also assessed. There will be a pre-post dental surgery comparison of the oral health-related quality of life ECOHIS scores.
