I spoke with Dr. Kevin Goheen about an important initiative that CDA is undertaking to try and understand dentists’ needs in the area of dental product information. Whether you save the printed little paper that comes with the product, or you scan and save it on your hard drive, or scour the internet to learn more, CDA would like to help you.

Do you have a hard time keeping track of information related to the growing number of dental products we use in our practices? Whether that product information is saved on paper or in a digital form, dentists need to have the most current facts available at their fingertips: it’s essential for developing practice protocols; achieving optimal, predictable clinical outcomes; and ensuring the safety of our patients and staff.
You’ve probably had the experience of searching for product information but not being able to find it—that’s frustrating to say the least. Sometimes it’s to look up health and safety warnings, refresh your memory about a bonding sequence for cementation of a restoration, or simply to learn more about a product you’re using for the first time. Getting the right product information at the right time is crucial to the care we provide our patients.
The CDA wants to better understand how dentists currently manage product information and how they would like to improve their access and use of that information in the future. As a first step, we’ve developed a very short survey that we’ll be able to use in fully appreciating the nature and degree of the challenges being faced in clinical practice.
The ultimate goal is to conceive and develop a single tool that will allow dentists to quickly and more efficiently find and use product information, specific to their practice needs. For the outcome to be meaningful we need to hear from as many dentists as possible. Only then will we be able to come up with a solution that will serve us all.
