After family is tested for HIV following dentist visit, experts say Ontario clinics should be regularly inspected. globalnews.ca: What should have been a routine trip to the dentist office turned into a nightmare for Susie Stauffer and her two young boys last March after health officials said they should be tested for HIV and hepatitis. The Stauffer family, from Guelph, Ont., were among the 3,600 patients of Guelph Dental Associates advised by public health officials to get tested for hepatitis B, C and HIV due to sterilization concerns. Fluoride Warnings Issued by International Group of Dentists. prnewswire.com: October is Dental Hygiene Month, but not all dentists will be touting the alleged benefits of fluoride. In fact, the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) is using this month to raise awareness of the health risks associated with fluoride. Do Dental Implants Have Higher Survival Rates In Patients Older Than 65 Years? jada.ada.org: As the population ages, more elderly patients are replacing their missing teeth. Dental implants have had good outcomes in younger patients, and clinicians and older patients may consider them to be an option. Knowing the prognosis of dental implants in patients older than 65 years is helpful when making treatment plans for older patients. Read the full article

New Blood Pressure Guidelines for Children. nytimes.com: In August the American Academy of Pediatrics published a 74-page report updating its guidelines for screening and managing high blood pressure in youngsters. The report includes a much-simplified chart to help practicing physicians readily determine whether a child’s blood pressure is within normal parameters. Read more

Colorado Dentists and Other Docs Seek Opioid Alternatives as Crisis Worsens. cpr.org: With opioid abuse claiming lives in Colorado and across the country, oral surgeons and other health care providers are looking to alternatives. Lafayette oral surgeon Curt Hayes recently switched to FDA-approved local anesthetic Exparel, a non-opioid. When he injects it into his patient’s’ gums the area will stay numb and pain free for two to three days. Read more

Anesthesia Wand Makes Dentist Visits Less Stressful For Patients. pittsburgh.cbslocal.com: A big, scary needle is not a welcome sight at the dentist’s office, and it can cause a lot of stress at later visits. For that reason, some dentists are using the wand, especially for patients who have had a bad experience with dental anesthesia in the past. Read more
