More clinics and more care for immigrants and refugees. dal.ca: The Faculty of Dentistry’s Immigrant Oral Health Outreach Clinic received $250,000 from Green Shield Canada (GSC) this week to expand its range of oral health care services and increase the number of clinics it holds. The immigrant and refugee population of Nova Scotia has much higher rates of oral disease than the Canadian average. Read more

Research from U of A School of Dentistry team suggests infants are born with more developed immune systems than thought. ualberta.ca: New research published by School of Dentistry immunologist and primary researcher Shokrallah Elahi suggests a newborn’s immune system is actually fully developed at birth, and identifying immature red blood cells (suppressor cells)―which are only present in infants―are responsible for keeping a baby’s immunity from functioning at full capacity. Deakin Trial Shows Soft Drink Price Rise Reduces Consumption. publicnow.com: Sales of soft drinks within a Melbourne hospital dropped by more than a quarter during an Australian-first trial of a sugar tax.
