Practical How To Supporting Your Practice

Practical How To: Professional Dental Photography Made Easy – Smile Lite MDP

This post was prepared in collaboration with Bisco Canada

On an experimental basis, we have asked a limited number of companies to provide us with practical “How To” answers to clinical questions. We were prompted to conduct this experiment when dental team members told us that they visit company websites and consult company representatives for practical clinical information. We look forward to receiving your feedback on this experiment.

Highlights

MDP,with_diffusors-424After 5 years of experimentation with the use of smartphones in dental photography, Dr. Louis Harden had the opportunity to begin the development of Smile Lite MDP with the community Style Italiano and the Swiss company Smile Line SA. The Smile Lite MDP is revolutionizing dental photography because it is simple to use yet, it delivers professional quality photographs.

This collaboration has resulted in an innovative Mobile Dental Photography (MDP) device that is focused on using a smartphone in dental photography. The Smile Lite MDP functions as a mini photo-studio with any smartphone.  The back of the Smile Lite MDP is equipped with a universal adapter that is adjustable for any model of smartphone having a width between 55-85mm.  The device is also equipped with three groups of LED’s (light emitting diodes).  Each group can be lit up individually, while you also have the possibility to set the power of illumination thanks to a dimmer (four different levels of intensity)

To find a universal color matching system, the Smile Lite MDP was developed to provide ideal lighting conditions (5,500 K = daylight), soft diffused light and polarized light in one unique device. With the combination of lights and diffusers, clinicians can now easily take anterior or posterior pictures, polarized photographs and use it for microphotography. Taking high quality digital photos has never been this easy. It can be used for shade matching, aesthetic pictures, short video clips, communication with the laboratory and documentation in patient charts.

Smile Line focused on smartphone technology as it has evolved and their cameras have interesting features and characteristics that are advantageous in dental photography:

  • Light & easy to operate
  • Battery life allows several working hours
  • Large display screens to view images
  • Very small aperture due to the small size of the camera and its diaphragm allows for high depth of field
  • Good ISO settings adds more light sensitivity to the camera with low noise
  • Good resolution for viewing small details
  • White balance, exposure, focus, ISO, metering and the shutter speed can be modified manually in most smartphone cameras.

With each new smartphone arriving on the market, each is equipped with a greater performing and amazing camera.  It is now the time to take advantage of this revolution in progress and be curious and play with the light and discover the phenomenal possibilities of the cameras on today’s smartphones to achieve the most beautiful dental photos.
