Coalition fighting tax changes adds members, gains momentum. cfib-fcei.ca: The Coalition for Small Business Tax Fairness welcomes seven new organizations in its fight against the federal government’s tax proposals that would dramatically change the way incorporated small businesses are taxed in Canada. The Coalition for Small Business Tax Fairness is encouraging those concerned about these changes to contact their Members of Parliament and use the hashtags #unfairtaxchanges #taxesinéquitables on social media. Morneau not swayed by tax-plan backlash; Finance minister defends decision to close loopholes for private corporations. Toronto Star: Finance Minister Bill Morneau is standing firm in the face of loud opposition to proposed tax changes for people with private corporations, which he says will “level the playing field” in the Canadian tax system. The changes have been blasted by the Conservative opposition in Ottawa as a “small-business tax grab,” while a newly formed coalition of more than 40 groups representing lawyers, doctors, businesses, farmers and others has called on Ottawa to drop the proposed reforms. ‘Doctors are under attack’: Group says medical offices are regularly hit by ransomware. nationalpost.com: Hackers have repeatedly targeted Canadian doctors with ransomware recently, hobbling computer systems that hold thousands of medical records and impeding patient care, says a major health-care organization. In the best-case scenario, medical offices spend two or three days restoring their systems from backup sites; at worst, they can lose masses of crucial data. The Canadian Medical Protective Association published an article this week urging physicians to ensure they have robust backup systems, vigorously guard against infection by computer viruses – and not pay ransom, if they are targeted. Canadian Medical Association is sweet on N.L. doctor’s proposal for a soda tax. cbc.ca: Canadian doctors are drinking up a motion from Newfoundland and Labrador health-care professionals to ask the federal government to tax sweetened beverages. “Applying it on a national level would mean the same definition across all provinces,” says Dr. Lynn Dwyer, president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association. No more than 6 teaspoons of added sugar per day for kids, experts say. cbc.ca: Children from the age of two to 18 should eat or drink no more than six teaspoons of added sugars daily, according to recommendations published in an American Health Association journal. The recommended amount equates to 100 calories or 25 grams, falling in line with guidelines previously expressed by the World Health Organization and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that added sugars should make up less than 10 per cent of calories. Changes coming to e-cigarette regulation in Manitoba. cbc.ca: Change is in the air around how the Manitoba Government regulates electronic cigarettes. The legislative changes, which go into effect Oct. 1, outlaw the sale of electronic cigarettes to minors and set out new rules around how vape shops can advertise and market their products. They’ll also mean the use of e-cigarettes will be banned in enclosed public spaces and other places where smoking is already prohibited. Read more

FDI delivers successful World Dental Congress and welcomes new president. fdiworlddental.org: Important outcomes of the meetings in Madrid include the welcoming of new FDI members, handover of FDI presidency to Dr. Kathryn Kell of the American Dental Association, elections/re-elections to the FDI Council and FDI Standing Committees, as well as the adoption of six new and three revised policy statements. FDI launches joint policy brief with NCD Alliance – Accelerating Action on Oral Health and NCDs. fdiworlddental.org: FDI today launched a joint policy brief with the Noncommunicable Disease Alliance (NCD Alliance) during a session held at the World Dental Congress in Madrid, Spain. The session entitled “No health without oral health: how the dental community can leverage the NCD agenda to deliver on the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals”, aimed at driving an integrated response to oral health and NCDs. Say Ahh’ announced as World Oral Health Day 2018-2020 theme. fdiworlddental.org: FDI launched a three-year campaign for World Oral Health Day (WOHD) under the theme ‘Say Ahh’ at the World Dental Congress in Madrid, Spain. Combined with different sub-themes each year, the 2018 WOHD campaign: ‘Say Ahh: Think Mouth, Think Health’ encourages people to make the connection between their oral health and their general health and well-being. Practice ownership declining among dentists. ada.org: Private practice ownership for dentists is steadily declining among all age groups, according to data published in the September issue of The Journal of the American Dental Association. Read more

JCVI using flawed evidence to reject HPV vaccinations. dentistry.co.uk: The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) recently decided against extending the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine to include all boys. The British Dental Association (BDA) believes the methods the JCVI used in its studies could give an over-conservative estimate of the benefits that come with vaccinating all boys, leading the JCVI to a misguided conclusion on cost-effectiveness. CDC awards $28.6 million to help states fight opioid overdose epidemic. cdc.gov: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is awarding more than $28.6 million in additional funding to 44 states and the District of Columbia to support their responses to the opioid overdose epidemic. The funds will be used to strengthen prevention efforts and better track opioid-related overdoses Read more

Dental students train to handle patients with mobility issues. alligator.org: An education course for University of Florida dental students is preparing them to handle patients in wheelchairs. Catering to the needs of disabled patients is an industry-wide problem. This Spring will be the third year the training is implemented in the colleges. Read more

Dentists want more tools taken off control list. bangkokpost.com: Dentists are pushing to have more dental tools removed from special watch lists for radioactive industry equipment even though a new law has recently loosened controls slightly. Dentists still feel the regulations are troublesome and expensive and claim the punishments for transgressors is unreasonable. Read more

Sugar content in food to be reduced further. swissinfo.ch: The interior ministry and the Swiss food industry have agreed on measures to further cut sugar in yogurts and breakfast cereals. The policy is part of the governmental food strategy and is to be continued until 2024. The economics ministry has also mandated a research project on the health risks of sugar. Read more

Schools and nurseries helping youngsters improve dental care. scotsman.com: Schools and nurseries are to supervise more Scottish youngsters brushing their teeth and provide dental hygiene advice. It comes amid growing concerns in recent years that tooth decay among youngsters living in more deprived areas is worse than children in better off neighbourhoods of Scotland. The Childsmile initiative in poorer areas involves children receiving two applications of fluoride varnish. Read more

Prosecco has taken the nation by storm as a cheaper alternative to champagne, but young women in particular risk gaining an unwelcome ‘prosecco smile’. Read more

New osteoporosis treatment uses traditional Chinese herb to prevent bone loss. news.ubc.ca: An herb widely used in traditional Chinese medicine might hold the key to a new osteoporosis therapy that could prevent bone loss without causing side effects. Using a compound derived from red sage, UBC researchers have found a way to selectively block an enzyme called Cathepsin K (CatK), which plays a major role in the breakdown of collagen in bones during osteoporosis. The findings were published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research. Read more

Alcohol abuse, dental conditions, mental health found to be causes of avoidable US emergency visits. sciencedaily.com: A recent study found that 3.5% of all emergency department visits analysed were ‘avoidable’. Of these, the top 3 discharge diagnoses were alcohol abuse, dental disorders, and mood disorders such as anxiety or depression. Read more

Exploring periodontitis in patients with Chédiak-Higashi syndrome. iadr.org: The International and American Associations for Dental Research (IADR/AADR) have published an article titled “Periodontitis in Chédiak-Higashi Syndrome: An Altered Immunoinflammatory Response”. In this study, the authors sought to determine the periodontal status of patients with severe and mild forms of CHS. Read more

Health prospects of children in care look worse than for anyone else. medicalxpress.com: Authors focused on dental data of looked after children in Scotland, but the results are likely to be the tip of a very worrying iceberg. Their paper, just published in the Archives of Disease in Childhood journal, has found that children in care have twice as many urgent dental health needs as the general child population, and twice as likely to have a tooth extraction under general anesthetic. However, there are resources available that can aid in conversations with patients about common dental procedures. The ADA Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry hopes so, and wants to empower researchers and clinicians to make that happen. The center is hosting a workshop, “How to Conduct and Publish Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses,” Nov 2-4 in Chicago. Read more

Study Shows Nurses’ Scrubs Become Contaminated with Bacteria in Hospitals. shea.online.org: Clothing worn by healthcare providers can become contaminated with bacteria, however having nurses wear scrubs with antimicrobial properties did not prevent this bacterial contamination from occurring, according to a study published online today in Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology, the journal of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America. Health Canada reviewing fix to protect pacemakers from hackers. cbc.ca: U.S. medical technology company Abbott, formerly St. Jude Medical, released a programming update to fix a security issue in the communication between some of its pacemakers and the computer networks they are connected to, which could theoretically leave them vulnerable to hackers. Health Canada could take up to 75 days to decide whether to approve a programming fix aimed at a potential security flaw in pacemakers manufactured by Abbott, formerly called St. Jude Medical. Can Internet-based interventions help people to stop smoking? cochrane.org: The evidence from trials in adults suggests that interactive and tailored Internet-based interventions with or without additional behavioural support are moderately more effective than non-active controls at six months or longer, but there was no evidence that these interventions were better than other active smoking treatments. However some of the studies were at high risk of bias, and there was evidence of substantial statistical heterogeneity. Treatment effectiveness in younger people is unknown. Read more

Antimicrobial resistance has a range of culprits from medical practices, antimicrobial stewardship, medical tourism, agriculture, etc. While we work to address the healthcare aspect of antimicrobial resistance, a new report is drawing attention to the role of consumption of antimicrobial agents and their role in the occurrence of resistance.
