CE Showcase Medically Compromised Patients Medicine Supporting Your Practice

CE Showcase ASM 2017: Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office – Medical Emergencies in Life!

It was a pleasure to meet and speak with Dr. Mel Hawkins for this interview. Generously, he prepared these slides to tell our audience what his session on medical emergencies will be about during ASM 2017. I hope you enjoy the conversation.

Highlights

Dentists are treating an aging and pharmacologically drug dependent and ambulatory population. How can they be expected to respond/react to life-threatening situations when they “almost never occur” – or do they? Simplicity!

Practical equipment adjuncts, a few good drugs, “red flags,” and understanding vasoconstrictor interactions, local anesthetic maximum doses, especially related to pediatric dentistry will be assessed during the session.

The syncope algorithm is universally applicable to initially treating any and all emergencies.

The team approach is emphasized. Morbidity/mortality case reports and anecdotes, including situations encountered in over 40 years in dentistry, will cover dental office, family, neighborhood, shopping centre and sports experiences.

Learning Objectives

  • To triage the differences between true emergencies, urgencies, annoyances and non-events
  • To comprehend the pharmacology of a very few drugs, including oxygen
  • To assess case reports in the dental office and in day-to-day life

Dr. Hawkins’ session runs May 5, 2017: 10:00 am – 12:30 pm Continuous 2:30 – 5:00 pm
