I am pleased to promote a very important activity which will take place April 8th at the School of Dentistry in the University of Alberta: Sharing Smiles Day! The activity is organized by the University of Alberta’s Oral Health Total Health chapter and promises to be a success. If you are in the Edmonton area on April 8th, join them in celebrating beautiful smiles for everyone.

Highlights

OHTH flyerProviding dental and oral health care for persons with special needs has been recognized as a longer term challenge.  This has an impact on the overall health of a vulnerable population while also creating gaps and inequities within our community.  These issues are the basis for the initiation of Oral Health, Total Health (OHTH); a non-profit organization with a mission to advocate, educate and improve the oral health care for persons with special needs.

During the morning and afternoon of Saturday, April 8th, 2017 at the University of Alberta, OHTH will be hosting their first annual Sharing Smiles Day Event (SSD).  SSD invites individuals from the special needs community and emphasizes the importance of oral health care for persons with special needs and raises awareness of the oral health care issues in our community.  The day starts off with an expo morning of various games led by dental and hygiene students. It is followed by a luncheon and fun interactive presentation made by the dental hygiene aand dentistry students. The day ends with interactive demonstrations on tooth brushing led by general practitioners, specialists of the dental profession, and dental hygiene professionals with the distribution of Colgate dental kits to each participant. Throughout the Day, it is anticipated that the local media will take an active part in the event.  This is a free event for all caregivers, participants, and volunteers.

Through SSD events, the hope is to foster comfort and care amongst all those participating and ultimately improve both the current and future oral health practices for this population.  SSD will bring together over 200 persons with special needs, University of Alberta dentistry and dental hygiene students, dentists and dental hygienists in the Edmonton community, in addition to special needs workers and many other special guests.
