Dr. Michael Sereny on FDI Annual Congress

Dr. Chiraz Guessaier had the opportunity to speak FDI’s Chair of the Dental Practice committee, Dr. Michael Sereny. He recently participated in the FDI World Congress in Poznan, Poland.

Highlights

The five-day meeting consists of the presentation of official reports and discusses various dental and oral health policies. The dental practice committee is the voice of dental practitioners and consists of dentists who work in their own various private offices and are connected to their dental communities.

The new oral health definition that was developed which is likely not as interesting to wet-fingered dentists was necessary as many view oral health as being limited to caries and periodontal disease. However, this is short-sighted as oral health really encompasses many other issues and is an important part of overall general health.

The policy statements are developed through a consultation, discussion and consensus process which typically takes about 2 years. The statements are produced in conjunction with other committees and organizations, such as the World Health Organization. Every year, there are revised or new policy statements and each committee brings forth topics of interest. New drafts are drawn up and then sent to other committees for different perspectives. After review of these comments, the revised draft is sent to different national dental associations which are governed by other rules and regulations. Further comments are discussed and/or incorporated and brought to the FDI assembly for approval.

The dental practice committee now looks to future work on sustainability in dentistry, dentistry and third party relationships, ethics as well as quality in dentistry amongst various other projects.
