Linda Pharand, RDH spoke with Dr. John O’Keefe about the S.M.I.L.E. Plus Dental Program in Winnipeg, MB.

S.M.I.L.E. Plus

S.M.I.L.E plus (Saving Mouths Income Limited Environment) is a Winnipeg Regional Health Authority Community Oral Health Program that operates with the goal to achieve an optimal level of oral health and well being through the provision of a full spectrum of dental treatment services and school and community based oral health promotion for children enrolled in targeted elementary schools in the Winnipeg Health Region.

The S.M.I.L.E plus Program is available to families with limited means.  A flat fee of $30.00 per appointment visit is charged to eligible families that do not have any insurance coverage.  The fee covers regular dental care, including exams, cleanings, preventive sealants, restorations and extractions.  Services are also provided for school-aged children that have limited dental coverage through First Nations & Inuit Health, EIA, or Refugee status.

For more information, visit the University of Manitoba’s S.M.I.L.E. plus website.
