The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issues a warning to avoid nonessential travel to the West African nations of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. This Level 3 travel warning is a reflection of the worsening Ebola outbreak in this region: as of July 27th, 2014, the cumulative number of cases attributed to Ebola in the three countries stood at 1,322, 728 of which had resulted in death. Connecticut congresswoman Rosa DeLauro introduced a bill to tax soda drinks to stem rising obesity and diabetes rates by curbing the consumption of sugary drinks. DeLauro’s legislation would levy a one-cent tax on manufacturers for every teaspoon of sugar in beverages. That would translate into a tax of about 15 cents on a 20-ounce bottle of Coca-Cola.
