Montreal Public Health calls for more regulations surrounding e-cigarettes and releases 5 recommendations for law makers. E-cigarettes, which are unregulated in Canada, are increasingly popular among smokers trying to quit, but critics say the lack of control means that e-cigarettes risk introducing a new generation of young people to smoking. International dentistry news

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves a new opioid painkiller designed to be more resistant to abuse, but experts warn the drug could wind up having the opposite effect. The drug, Targiniq, combines the usual narcotic pain reliever with naxalone, a drug that blocks the euphoric effects of oxycodone, but it’s only effective when snorted or injected, not when swallowed whole. Critics worry that if doctors believe Targiniq is safe, they may be more inclined to prescribe it instead of seeking alternatives. Learn more…

Doctors in India extract 232 teeth – a world record – from the mouth of a 17-year-old boy in a 7-hour operation. The boy was diagnosed with a complex composite odontoma, a sort of benign tumour where a single gum forms lots of teeth. Learn more…

GlaxoSmithKline seeks approval for world’s first malaria vaccine. However, hopes that the vaccine, called RTS,S, would wipe out malaria were dampened when results from a trial showed the shot only reduced episodes of the disease by 30 per cent compared to immunization with a control vaccine. Dental industry news

A carbon dioxide laser produces rapid pulses of infrared light at a wavelength that the teeth absorb particularly well, and could banish the dental drill. The device, called Solea, also has a numbing effect that could eliminate the need for anesthesia. Learn more…
